Masamitsu Araki
Born 1981 in Yamagata, Japan.
Lives and works in Kyoto.
Artist, musician, sound designer.
While music is the subject of his activities, he takes standing on its periphery as a starting point, humorously pursuing the creativity of listening and re-connecting it with music to encourage a reconsideration of context and utility. The soundscape constructed through their unique interpretation and process utilizes sound, video, voice, site-specific elements and environments, and is presented in a wide variety of forms, including theater pieces, installations, performances, tours, and sound sources. The work is based on the idea of drifting through the boundaries of “sound-music” together, which can be seen by breaking down and observing the totality of sound that surrounds us from a familiar perspective.
Araki is also active as a member of ARCHIVES PAY, a participatory work group for recording, and NEW MANUKE, a music group, and has collaborated with a wide variety of artists as a sound designer, and has been returning the knowledge he has gained through his sound contributions at each site to his own activities.
